The report focuses on the role criticism plays today and shows, how it has lost its potential for radical structural changes. Therefore, it is claimed that the inspiration for a new perspective on critique is to be found outside the traditional field of so- cial science. This inspiration is found in the work ‘Fear and Trembling’ written by Søren Kierkegaard under the pseudonym Johannes De Silentio. Thus the report examines the possibilities of a subversive critique through ‘Fear and Trembling’. In the first part of the analysis, it is argued that, subversive critique necessitates a resignation on mundane realities. However, it is concluded that the critique, made possible through this resignation, is itself part of the reproduction of the existing order. The second part of the analysis problematizes the universal, since it appears as subject to the impacts of ideology. The possibility of a subversive critique, roo- ted in the universal is hereby rejected and it is discussed whether the subversive potential is to be found in faith. It is concluded that a subversive critique is an im- possibility, since faith is characterized by silence. Thus the purpose of the critique will be to defend silence.
