The present work deals with the difficulties for a local hybrid waste disposal company under municipal ownership to introduce a functioning circular economy for plastics. In the project, our cooperation with the waste management organization Vestforbrændingen is explained and, with the help of various experts from the area, clarified which barriers but also enablers must be overcome on the way to the target. The company is characterized by the fact that it operates on the free market and therefore it underlies the price pressure to work as cheap as possible and at the same time to be located in the public sector. For this reason, we chose hybridity as an elementary theory to explain this situation. Furthermore, we go into the Business Model Canvas to discuss the current business model used for plastic and thereby to point out the difficulty of introducing the circular economy.
By analyzing several interviews together with specialist articles, guesses were made as to which conditions really exist. Our research led us to the conclusion that there is currently no profitable business model for recycled plastic that Vestforbrændingen could use. Only by changing structures in the existing system through new government decisions and more cooperation with the municipalities can improve something. In addition, it must become a goal to carry out recycling in Denmark and not to deport it abroad.
