This paper entitled “From Banking Crisis to Banking Union” with the subtitle “A Discursive Analysis of post-crisis financial regulation within the European Union” is, surprisingly a discursively based study of post-crisis financial regulation within the EU.
The paper is consists of a literature review regarding political science approaches to the study of EU financial regulation, where I choose to argue for adopting a ideational framework to this topic. The methodological approach is based on a single case exploratory research design, with discourse analysis of policy documents as the primary method and supplementary use of field notes and secondary literature.
The analysis involves a background section on the development and current state of regulation of the financial sector at the EU level, followed by a discursive analysis of key legal documents of EU financial regulation. I conclude, in this chapter and in general, that there is a logical congruence between the discourse analysed and the associated regulatory framework adopted. I end with a forward looking discussion and a hopeful vision for the future of financial regulation.
