During the last decades the world of television and television programmes has been developing rapidly. The number of programmes and genres is growing and there is specifically one genre that is dominating the range of programmes shown on TV. This is reality television. This paper examines and investigates what this popular genre actually is, how it is build up and most of all what it specifically is that fascinates and keeps the viewers interest. The paper and its research is build upon a carefully chosen Danish reality programme. First, this paper reports what the genre is and how it is constructed. Furthermore the programme is analyzed with a particular reference to examine which cinematic elements there are brought into focus to keep the viewers attention. Chosen terms of Goffman are used in order to analyze and understand the actions of the acting people in the programme. The study indicated that there are specific cinematic elements there are being used in order to keep the attention of the viewer. Furthermore the results of the analyze showed that the aspects of social interactions, concurrence and conflicts are working as maintaining elements. Therefore it is possible to conclude that there is a significant relationship between the use of cinematic elements and the attention of the viewer.
