This paper examines students’ use of laptop computers and smartphones during university lectures and the possibilities and challenges associated with this. Furthermore it investigates the effects the use of these technologies has on the students’ concentration throughout a lecture. In order to acquire knowledge on this subject, we have made use of theoretical and methodological studies presented by sociologists Hanne Warming and Ida W. Winther as well as theoreticians Charles Duhigg and Knud Illeris. We have put the theories presented by aforementioned authors at practical use by observing students at three individual lectures at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. With the acquired knowledge and empirical data from our observations, we have analyzed the effects the use of laptop computers and smartphones had on the students’ behavior throughout the lectures. Furthermore we have observed and investigated how students’ habits affect the use of these technologies and how students affect each other to use them in a non-educational manner. Lastly we have discussed the benefits and consequences in relation to the use of technologies during aforementioned observed university lectures. As a result of our observations, analysis and discussion we have been able to conclude that the use of laptop computers and smartphones throughout a university lecture can affect the students’ level of concentration, both positively and negatively. For instance, the use of computers and smartphones allow the students to share and edit notes, while also giving them the opportunity to play games and visit entertainment websites throughout the lecture. It is therefore the responsibility of each individual student to assess and utilize these possibilities in a beneficial way.
