Foucault og de konkrete levede liv

Emil Rasmussen

Studenteropgave: Speciale

This thesis is an examination of both the potential and limits of Foucaultian discourse analysis. This
examination will be centered around three different readings of French philosopher, Michel
Foucaults, work. These three readings are comprised of two articles by professor in philosophy,
Sverre Raffnsøe, two articles by professor in psychology, Derek Hook, and the book, Køn, etnicitet
og skoleliv, by Danish professor at the Danish Institute for Pedagogy and Education, Dorte
Staunæs. Staunæs’ book will be discussed as an example of Foucaultian discourse analysis in the
context of Raffnsøe and Hooks articles, both which position discourse analysis as a problematic
utilization of Foucaults work. The point of this examination is then to explicate these problems as
they presented by Raffnsøe and Hook in relation to Staunæs’ book. This examination is therefore an
attempt at illuminating why a Foucaultian discourse analysis might be problematic and what
measures might be taken instead in a Foucault inspired examination and analysis. In short the goal
of this thesis is to outline the pitfalls and advantages that might appear when the theories of
Foucault are being put to use as a tool and method for discourse analysis.
