By comparing theologist and poet Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundvig’s writings Politiske betragtninger med blik på Danmark og Holsten, 1831 and Det danske firkløver – danskheden partisk betragtet, 1836, the report Folk og dannelse – Grundvig i 1830’erne, concludes that Grundvig’s views on constitution of state and the people, undergoes a significant development during the 1830’s. In Grundvig’s Politiske Betragtninger etc., he expresses no confidence in the mob or people, yet all confidence in the king. Five years later in 1836 Grundvig presents his idea of a school for public knowledge, in Det danske firkløver etc. The tone has changed. Grundvig pays tribute to what is Danish, as expressed in the Danish people and speaks in favor of an education of the public, aimed at preparing the people for taking part in matters of state. The report demonstrates that Grundvig, over a short period of time, goes from warning against public influence on matters of state, to formulating a plan of action for “popular education”.
