Abstrakt

Abstract This project is about refugee camps, and how a refugee camp can be percieved as as socio-tecnical system. Globally, there is a total of 36.460.806 victims of forced migration but no universel recognition of the questions what is a refugee? and what is a refugee camp. On the basis of these questions, this project answers the following thesis statement: Hvordan kan en flygtningelejr forstås som et socioteknisk system og hvordan bidrager dette til den generelle opfattelse af en flygtningelejr som fænomen? How can a refugee camp be percieved as a socio-tecnical system and how does this contribute to the general understanding of the refugee camp as a phenomenon? In order to answer this we applied as a method the case-study, based on a refugee camp in Tchad and how this specific camp can be viewed as a socio-tecnical system. We carried out the case-study by interviewing the engineer Karl Skovgaard Møller who has participated in the planning of several camps, including our case Iridimi. The projects analysis is based on theory from the following: the architect Manuel Herz, for the explanation of the theoretical principles behind the planning of refugee camps. The anthropologist Michel Agiers book Managing the Undesirables is used throughout the project to define refugee camps and refugees. Geert Hofstede, also an anthropologist, we use to clarify differences in culture and finally the philosopher Langdon Winner is applied to describe technologies as forms of life, that exists in symbiosis with humans in a continuing relationship that transforms social structures. In the project, the socio-tecnical system is defined using Frank Geels theory. Firstly, we apply it generally to describe a refugee camps as a socio-technical system in a universiel context, including the different regimes within the system. Subsequently we describe the socio technical system in our specific case-study. This results in a thorough understanding of how a refugee camp functions as a socio- technical system. We conclude that, given the complex nature of a refugee camp, considering each regime within the system as equally significant is of outmost importance.
