Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

This study examines how the terrorist attack the 22nd of July 2011 in Norway, executed by the
rightwing extremist, Anders Breivik, is portrayed in the movies Utøya 22. juli by Erik Poppe and 22
July by Paul Greengrass. By analysing the movies through their genres, and separate cinematic and
dramaturgical effects, the study aims to explore the two film makers different messages. Therefore,
we have also involved articles, which contain interviews with both film makers. History analyses
of both movies, articles and a manifesto of Breivik himself, will help us suggest possible places
of memory with connected collective memory. Both in Norway, but also generally in the western
societies. The analyses hold terms like historical consciousness, politics of memory, the use of history
and of course places of memory and collective memory. Based on the outcome of the analyses,
the study discusses different aspects of realism, different political messages and how
memory is processed differently in each film. Finally, the discussion will treat what opportunities
there is in portraying history through movies, in comparison to portraying it through professional
written history, according to Robert A. Rosenstone. Furthermore, the study concludes that the two
movies Utøya 22. juli and 22 July serve different purposes as far as the shaping of memory goes.
The way each film shape memories, is supported by earlier mentioned genre-related, cinematic
and dramaturgical choices in the portrayal of the movies.
