Abstrakt

The purpose of this study, is to explore the usage of the term fictionalization. This is done by focusing on the case The Act of Killing by the instructor Joshua Oppenheimer. Using our theoretical knowledge concerning documentarism, cinematic effects and fictionalization, we have analyzed the documentary using different methods to see how fictionalization is being used. The themes of the movie and the character development, has also been analyzed. The question of how much one can twist the truth that is being told, has been discussed thoroughly, with the analysis being the basis of our discussions. We found, that the use of fictionalization in The Act of Killing has several consequences. As fictionalizing is individual to the viewer, thus can the piece be interpreted differently. Since we have been questioning rather than concluding, we have not reached a conclusion. The study is to be viewed upon as a part of the discussion, as to where to draw the line between fact and fiction.
