Abstrakt

Today, in contemporary Western society, we focus increasingly on our home and how it is furnished. Life style magazines, homebuilding and interior design are all representatives of this tendency. This tendency can be seen as a result of more overall societal changes where increased individualization and autonomy enlarges the pursuit of authenticity. Especially trough material things this pursuit of authenticity takes place and is made possible by a general increased income and hereby improved standards of living. The attempt of being unique is amongst other expressed through interior design, where taste is a clear index of establishing a position for one self. We have chosen to focus on this kind of position through the life style programme ‘Feinschmecker’, through which the position of the dominating class is clearly expresses through taste and distaste. The dissociation through taste by the dominating class is a subject the theorist Pierre Bourdieu has given much attention to. That is why we have chosen to carry out a field analysis of this life style programme with the use of the concepts of Bourdieu. With the use of these concepts we also delimit the field to the field of interior design. We primarily focus on the concepts of capital, including the concept of cultural capital, economic capital, social capital, symbolic capital, habitus, and positions, which are all part of the concept of field, the social arena in which people manoeuvre and struggle in pursuit of desirable resources. On the field of interior design the right composition of capital is the prerequisite for the exclusive taste and hereby dominating and dissociating position. The exact composition of capital is in this case economic capital; exclusive interior design requires the right economic resources, but especially it requires the cultural capital, because one is in need of the right socialization in developing the right taste of culture. Through the exclusive taste of culture, the dominating class expels itself from other social classes and hereby maintains its exclusive position.
