This project is written for the purpose of examining which criteria of employment are presently being used in the process of employing leaders in the public sector of Denmark. I have used a hermeneutical approach, which is reflected in the purpose of the assignment by the fact that I have challenged my own pre-understanding of leaders being hired on the basis of their academic abilities. Therefore I have interpreted whether personal competences and personal charisma also play a valid part in the employing process. In my research, I have utilized the theoretical background of Ulrich Beck and Richard Sennett, whom both describe the modern day labour market. I also used the theory of Betina W. Rennison, which describes the modern style of leadership, professional leadership. The data sets utilized in this assignment are the products of qualitative interviews with respectively a chief consultant of DJØF’s Career and Competence Center and the senior management consultant of Mercuri Urval. In conclusion, I can say that a combination of academic ability and experience constitutes the most important areas to impress at in order to be considered for the job, while the personal competences and the personal charisma also remain key factors in the employing process, and what finally makes the decision is the chemistry between the two parties during the job interview.
