This study examines the meaning of Faroese national identity and how it is affected and bound up to the relationship to Denmark. Faroese national identity is both significant and strongly founded in it’s religious communities as in tradition which indicates an interdependency between the two. In addition to that the national identity is influenced by thoughts of independency and call for a need to take responsibility. By using an interdisciplinary analytical design for investigating qualitative data and by setting up a theoretical frame that relies on a hermeneutic understanding as well as Benedict Anderson and Anthony Smith, we have sought to get closer to an understanding of the relations and features and their impact on the Faroese context.
