Experimental investigation on Rolling Resistance of Pneumatic Tires

Abstrakt

This report was inspired by a previous Master thesis (Hansen and Larsen, 2017) at Roskilde University. The report focuses on developing a systematic investigation of how rolling resistance in pneumatic tires depends on air pressure, load and speed. With the load ranging from 13 N to 70 N, the speed ranging from 1.5 m/s to 5 m/s and pressure ranging from 1 bar to 4 bar. The pneumatic used for the experiment was an off-road roller skate pneumatic tire, prone to high speeds and loads. The experimental method used a custom built setup, including an inner drum-measurement approach. Results showed good reproducibility. A considerable amount of noise occurred for low load data points, therefore no apparent relations are concluded for the low ranging loads. The results showed that the pressure decreases the rolling resistance as pressure increases agreeing with existing literature. This is true for both rolling resistance and rolling resistance coefficient, where the rate of decrease, increases with load. Increasing the load causes the rolling resistance to increase and the rolling resistance coefficient to have a slight increase, which is also found in Hansen and Larsen (2017). The rate of increase for rolling resistance increases with load whilst the rate of increase for rolling resistance coefficient decreases with load. The speed seems to have no significant influence on rolling resistance and rolling resistance coefficient except at the high load and low pressure data points where there appears to be a slight increase.
