Expections of communication

Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

This project is about different people’s expectations of communication, which have been made through an analysis of some of the characters from the sitcom Big Bang Theory. Here, there is specific focus on the character Sheldon Cooper, and how he communicates with his group of friends, as he often fails in regular conversation, as he doesn’t understand sarcasm etc. It is discovered that the expectations of communication are very individual and strongly depends on our own way of communicating. It’s also discovered that one should follow some common norms (Maxims) in order to be able to make a conversation work smoothly for everybody. Otherwise the conversation could end abruptly, as it could frustrate your conversational partner if they don’t understand you. If there are misunderstandings it can also lead to double sided conversations, where the two parties talk past each other, which could change the result of the conversation
