Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

This paper examines euthanasia, and how it is articulated. We have outlined the terms Kantianism and Utilitarianism as a background for our further work. Through analysis of the argumentation we have studied the philosophers James Rachels’, Peter Singer ́s, Ole Hartling ́s and David Velleman ́s arguments for and against euthanasia. Furthermore, we have analyzed The Danish Council on Ethics ́ arguments for and against euthanasia. It is worth mentioning that the council is against a legalization and they are a big part of the fact that euthanasia is not legalized in Denmark.
The Netherlands have had a legalization of euthanasia since 2002 which is why we have chosen to discuss if Denmark can benefit from their experiences. We have in this context chosen to use RTE (Regional Euthanasia Review Commitees), which is a Dutch committee which focuses exclusively on cases regarding euthanasia.
This project cannot conclude whether euthanasia should be legalized in Denmark due to the complexity of this ethical dilemma, but the project shows which arguments from the debate that can be assessed as valid.
