Abstrakt

This review outlines the emerged literature on borders and Fortress Europe (especially after the consolidation of the European Union) and its contribution to the field of the study of borders. A study where new types of theories of borders are emerging from the middle of the 1990s to understand the changing nature of these contemporary borders and their challenges in terms of: migration, migration policies, labour market, social behaviour patterns, among others. Our project reflects a historical overview of the concept of borders and its evolution through time under the frames of sociology and politics, with a few streaks and minor examples of economy.
Through globalisation and the integration of new countries to the European Union (EU), the aim of this review is to investigate border theories and concepts. Finally, taking into consideration the methodologies that our scholars use in order to study borders and Fortress Europe, we recommend to increase international approaches that challenges the European understanding of borders.
