EUfori.dk – Europe for the people - News on the European Union by young people for young people EUfori.dk is a website where young people get news on the European Union (‘eufori’ translates as ‘euphoria’). The idea behind the concept is that news on the EU needs a freshening up – especially to appeal to the younger generation. To achieve that aim we suggest treating journalism about the EU as all other kinds of journalism. More precisely we list nine parameters to change how journalists cover the EU: We add two new, more positive frames to the existing coverage of the EU, we prioritize different news values, we add several new genres to the existing EU-journalism, we prioritize younger sources when possible, we favour younger journalists, our target group is younger than the target group of existing journalism on the EU, we come out on the internet as opposed to a big part of today’s coverage and we use social media to spread our stories. These alternative uses can strengthen the chance that younger people will catch an interest in the EU. This master thesis is organized on two levels to show how to shape a new kind of journalism on the EU. In the first level we diagnose the weaknesses, shortcomings and limitations of the existing coverage of the EU in Danish media, and we define the journalistic parameters a concept for a new online journalism on the EU contains. In the second level we explore how to shape a concept for a new online EU-journalism that appeals to a younger crowd.
