Studenteropgave: Speciale

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the following issue: “While Kenya has a large potential for geothermal energy, how can this be exploited to create economic development and prosperity for the people”. Through examination of the political structures and the policies, the political will to further develop geothermal energy in Kenya is analysed. Subsequently the needs for further electricity production are examined, and the different relevant technologies for electricity production are compared. Hereafter the geographical and geological conditions for geothermal energy are described. The structural limitations are analysed, after which the industrial structures and growth sectors are examined. Finally the possibilities for financing geothermal development are analysed. By keeping a strict political discipline and implementing the agreed energy policy, it will be possible to further exploit geothermal energy in Kenya. Thereby it can secure a cheap and reliable energy source, which in turn can secure jobs by attracting further investments to Kenya and making existing industries competitive. This will create economic development and prosperity for the Kenyan people.
