Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

The main purpose of this study is to explain lower voter turnout in European parliamentary elections when compared to Danish parliamentary elections. Based on a rational choice perspective the study states four different main hypotheses, which are tested in order to point out how the two elections are perceived differently by the individual. Thusly a greater knowledge of the factors that have an impact on turnout in the two elections is acquired. The other part of the study tries to put the theoretical understanding of the two elections in to practice by proposing different ways to boost turnout at the European parliamentary elections. The solutions are compulsory voting, multiple elections on one day, media campaigns, better integration of EU teaching material in history and social studies classes, and more transparency in the structure of the EU through a bicameral system. The study concludes that the main difference between the two elections is the low perception of voting duty towards European institutions, the low perception of benefit by voting at European parliamentary elections and the perceived and actual low probability of casting a decisive vote at European parliamentary elections when compared to Danish parliamentary elections. Furthermore seeking information about European parliamentary elections requires more effort (which results in high cost) for the individual. The study also concludes that none of the solutions mentioned above can be considered unproblematic. All of the solutions should have some theoretical impact though the actual impact could not be verified in all of the cases.
