The objective of this project is to examine the social consequences, caused by gentrification for socially exposed groups, in particular substance abusers, in Inner Vesterbro. The main methodical approach is through the use of two qualitative interviews. The purpose is to grant the project with insight knowledge in both the subject ‘gentrification’ and social life that takes place in Inner Vesterbro. To support the empirical data, we draw on the conceptual framework by Howard S. Becker and Sharon Zukin. We make use of Becker’s theory on social outsiders and Zukin’s theory on gentrification. Additionally, employ a report made by the consultancy NIRAS on human preferences in urban life. Our findings reveal a demographic change in the area, which has caused a larger margin between the group ‘outsiders’ and the new citizens. The new citizens of Inner Vesterbro possess better resources, which puts them in a position of both political and economic power and control. This gives them great leverage in the debate about the right to live and make use of the city. The consequences can ultimately cause the group of outsiders to vanish from the area.
