Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

This project concerns a voluntary support group for people diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and the health benefits of the participants. Interviews were conducted with the members of the support group, their coordinator and an employee of the rehabilitation center in Gribskov municipality. The collected data was analyzed in conjunction with the theoretical framework of the project; primarily based on Steen Wackerhausen’s Open Health Concept and Aaron Antonovsky’s Theory of Sense of Coherence (SOC). This project finds that the support group creates an enhancement in the members Sense of Coherence as well as their capability of reaching a goal. It is shown that the support groups ability to provide knowledge in relation to the everyday lives of the participants, promotes the health of the individual while norms and the coordinator of the group can limit the possibilities of participation. Furthermore it is argued that support groups due to no time limit and the creation of a social community are successful in promoting the health of people with COPD.
