The project at hand deals with the understanding of chivalrous qualifications and way of life in the 13th century, as presented by the catalan theologist Raymond Lull in The Book of the Order of Chivalry. In order to address this problem, Pierre Bourdieu’s historical sociological approach has provided the tools necessary for an in-depth analysis. Our research has shown that economical, social, physical, religious and cultural aspects were essential for the chivalrous way of life. Wealth, family name and a healthy body was required, if the squire for instance should learn to ride a horse, which, according to Lull, was an absolute necessity. Furthermore, the right set of religious and cultural values could determine whether or not access to the community was granted.
