Abstract The pivotal point of the project is the textile and clothing industry in Bangladesh. For starters the project will map the historical development of which the industry has gone through in general in order to connect this historical development with the one Bangladesh’ textile and clothing industry has experienced. Furthermore the historical development of Bangladesh in the process of reaching its independence will be described shortly. One of the objects of the project is to place the textile and clothing industry of Bangladesh in a global value chain. In addition to that the value added to each of the links in the global value chain is examined. The result of the examination indicates that Bangladesh is placed in the production in the global value chain where the value added to this link is relative lower than in some of the other links. Beyond this, the project looks on whether there has been a development in the placement of Bangladesh in the global value chain, which has led to the result that there has been an upgrade in shape of primarily functions upgrade and incipient product upgrade. The actual placement in the global value chain however is the same while no of the upgrades have led to a shift in the placement in the links. Additionally does the examination concern which strategy in trading Bangladesh has carried out since its independence. To that it will be discussed how and why this particular placement in the value chain came to be based on three theoretical perspectives:liberalism, neomarxism and an economic nationalism perspective. The result shows that the strategy of trading carried out in Bangladesh since its independence has resulted in a liberalisation of trading. The theoretical perspectives view the consequences of this development very differently.
