In this project we will examine the problem of loneliness among the growing population of elders in Denmark, and come up with a solution to combat this problem. This will be done through understanding how the elderly perceive loneliness, and how to attract lonely elders to local activity centers.
To understand the mindset of the elders, we decided to conduct interviews in a local activity center in the city of Gundsømagle. Through said interviews, we discovered the positive effect these people felt when actively making use of the center. When we compare this to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we concluded that the activity center we were examining didn’t have a problem with it’s activities, but more so it’s ability to reach out to the lonely elders. We then held interviews with former-government employed caretakers, to understand how to best reach these lonely elders, whom might also are socially isolated.
We concluded the most effective way to combat loneliness among elders, and to persuade more elderly to attend activity centers, would be through a campaign placed in local newspapers and near public areas such as bus stops, in hope of catching the lonely elders attention.
