The purpose of this project is to examine how the professional identity of the Danish nurses is expressed through communication that represented the nurse staff group in the collective bargaining in the public sector of Denmark during the Spring of 2018. The collective bargaining led to a historically immense voter turnout in the ballot amongst the trade union members about the landed agreements. There was an enhanced focus on the dramatic negotiations in the media, because the trade unions joined forces across the different areas of the public sector to ensure improved working conditions for all, and the trade unions and professional groups used all possible communication platforms in order to improve their positions in the negotiations. This project focuses on the nurses' communication, and through concepts from textual analysis theories such as discourse, framing and argumentation, the project analyses how the professional identity is expressed in the forms of a campaign video launched by the Danish Nurses' Organization, a newspaper commentary written by the president of the organisation, another commentary written by a charge nurse, and finally a Facebook post by a representative of the nurses. The link between the nurses' professional identity and communication is made through the nurses' positioning to professional discourses that like the nurse profession itself, are cultural-historically founded and developed. The project concludes that the nurses' communication in the collective bargaining reveals a disruption in their professional identity, which appears in the nurses' positioning to the professional discourses about the academic development, practical work focus, gender distribution and professional calling connected to the nursing profession. The project discusses the importance of this professional identity disruption in relation to the future of the profession, and finally calls on further research on this area.
