Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstract In this thesis we investigate an alternate reading practice as presented by literary critic Roland Barthes in The Death of the Author written in 1968. Our examination centers on Barthes’ essays which illuminates a thesis about an authors importance for his work. Barthes argue that we as readers must abandon the literary approach that sees the author of the point of departure for the comprehension of literature. Instead we must focus on the language itself, and through that reach The Rustle of Language. Based on Barthes’ literary approach, supplemented by literary theorists Viktor Sjklovskij and Roman Jakobson, we will carry out a reading of the novel On Darkness (danish: Om mørke) by the danish author Josefine Klougart. In our reading of Klougart’s novel, we discovered an “experience of more”, and with the words of Dorthe Jørgensen, we can describe this experience as an transcendental experience. By including a literary movement from our contemporary, we challenge the retrieved reading practice, which through development of technology are made difficult to obtain.
