The intention of this paper is to get a renewed view upon today's academical understanding of community within the theoretical field of existential psychology. With the use of Jean-Paul Sartre and his conceptual universe, this paper intends to unfold as to what is the meaning of Sartre's Existence precedes essence. In Sartreanian existentialism, subjects are always free to choose, as to what goes for those possibilities that follow the rules of the realm those subjects live in. At the same time, Sartre points to the notion that subjects are deceived by themselves when amongst others in a community because of a tendency to what Sartre refers to as self-deception. In relation to the state of self-deception this paper intends to renew the theory with what would be named existential robustness. With the ability to potentially ward of parts of the self-deception, subjects with existential robustness will open up for a duality of the community concept. This duality, because the community viewed from a stance of existential robustness, will change the existential view upon the community to the extent where said community will be able to withstand a state of both containing individuals that live in self-deception and individuals with existential robustness. In the course of this paper, an interview will be conducted on the basis of a phenomenological perspective. With the phenomenological perspective, it is possible to withdraw an estimate of our interviewee's Lebenswelt or lifeworld. Phenomenology is thus the go-to method because subjects within the world of existential views are reduced to a subjectively inside-out perspective, as to where the phenomenological method will be the closest this paper will be able to get with an outside-in perspective. In the interview, the interviewee, soon to be known as Julius, shows signs of existential robustness. With the existential robustness Julius becomes an entity accumulated by an innate duality, that constitutes a possibility for Julius to maintain his own choices, and on the other hand, succumb to self-deception. Meanwhile, he also lives within a community that also exists of an innate duality that originates from Julius' own duality.
