This paper investigates which implications the ideal of the ‘healthy human’ in the activity oriented planning of Byparken in Albertslund South, can have for the residents surrounding Byparken. We want to examine Byparken in Albertslund as a case, because we want to obtain a thorough understanding for a specific field, and because in this particular municipality they have worked extensively with health in the public planning. In our theory of science, we confess to a critical realistic perspective because we consider it necessary and appropriate as it enables us to approach our project with a social criticism and thus help to create progressive social change. To manage this perspective, we have chosen to draw on concepts of power, normalization and self-discipline by Michel Foucault and draw on Richard Sennett and his theory of the functional urban space. When the municipalities were assigned the responsibility of implementing health in public planning, they took on a field in rapid development. Therefore, we analyze the development and the predominant health discourse, which is reflected in the ideas behind Byparken to create a platform from where we will assess the ideal of the healthy human in the planning and architecture. To gain a proper understanding of the target field, we have used the methods photo mapping and qualitative interviews. We will use this knowledge to demonstrate, on one hand how the public space can be the facilitator of a city where the healthy choice is the easy choice, and on the other, how the functions of the urban space can have individualizing and self-actualizing consequences, which can destroy the meaning of the space as a community and unity. Furthermore it will be concluded to what degree the municipality power perspectives indirectly control the residents towards a particular health ideal.
