This project aims to investigate how come there seems to be an increasing use of em-powerment in the practice of the social psychiatry and furthermore how the income of empowerment influences this practice.
To achieve this knowledge, the inquiry is based on an extreme case study dealing with the private institution Oestagergaard, as we hereby obtain a detailed investigation of a private healthcare center. Therefore, we have chosen to interview the pedagogical lead-er as a representative of this institution and this is supported with participating obser-vations. The case study is furthermore supported by the use of the document analysis in which we analyze the progress in the danish psychiatric field. In order for us to gain inside of this progress, we have chosen to base our theory on theoretically work by oth-er investigators. This to understand how and especially why the empowerment-orientated approach seems to dominate the current practice. To illustrate the potential as well as complications in such an approach, we have chosen to end our theory by fo-cusing on the complexity of empowerment; as a emancipation versus technologies of self-control. Our theory will therefore be the centre of this case study about Oestag-ergaard.
In this case study about Oestagergaard, we conclude that there are noticeable potentials in their use of empowerment, since they succeed in building a work community that contributes to the development of the young people. Although, the pedagogical leader highlights some seriously barrier in the society where there do not seem to be any space for this group of people after leaving Oetagergaard. This is due to a negative image of this group, as they are considered as cost of the society rather than a resource and fur-thermore this group fails to submit the efficiency demands of society.
In this respect, we find it reasonable to conclude how there seems to be some contradic-tions in terms in the interaction between the society and the discourses.
