Emotion og etik

Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

#In this dissertation I investigate the relation between emotions and ethics. I draw upon the results of several studies conducted to explore the emotional responses of normal people as well as patients with certain types of brain damage and psychopaths in relation to moral judgements. These studies have provided valuable information about the importance of emotions, and they offer an alternative explanation to claims of innate moral knowledge and principles and a presumably better explanation of the existence of widespread moral intuitions.I then go on to explore the constitution of emotions within the framework of modern cognitive emotion theories and O. H. Green’s belief/desire theory. I argue that the cognitive emotion theories and the belief/desire theory can explain certain aspects of emotions which otherwise would be hard to explain. I go on to investigate the phenomenon of empathy and argue that our ability to feel empathy explains the fact that we care for the welfare of other people, and that empathy constitutes the fundamental motivational background for developing and living in accordance with moral principles
