Abstrakt

This project contains an analysis of the conflict in El Salvador between the gangs, pandillas, and the government. The object of analysis is the documentary La Vida Loca from 2008 by Christian Poveda. The project includes a discussion of whether the government truly intended to solve the conflict with their law of Mano Dura or whether it was a symbolic tool for gaining the support of the top part of society as well as using the pandilla as a scapegoat, allowing them to ignore the actual issues of society. Furthermore we compare Mano-Dura to the approach of the NGO Homies Unidos,in order to see!if either one has made a difference in preventing gang related crime and rehabilitation. Lastly we will try to answer the question of how Poveda presents the conflict in his documentary and in which way he has angled his presentation.
