The intent of this project is to identify whether or not today’s youth get excluded from a group when they choose whether they want to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes in a social context. Furthermore, we aim to explain what the role of alcohol and cigarettes play in youth culture in the present relative to the past. Based on the Danish Health Authority’s anti-smoking campaign BUT WHY? and the debate “Jeg føler mig tør, ensom og kedelig når jeg ikke drikker alcohol” from Information; a Danish news outlet, we discuss how alcohol and cigarettes may be used as a means to exclude an individual from social groups as it relates to the theories and methods presented. In order to thoroughly examine the statement of intent, this project discusses the theories of Axel Honneth, including “the struggle for recognition”. In this theory, Axel Honneth claims that an individual’s need for recognition is an essential requirement in developing a personal identity. Furthermore, this project makes use of Erving Goffmans theory on social interaction and stigmatized identity. We utilize both theories extensively as they proved important in our research on why young people drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes as a means to get accepted by their peers. In regard to methods, we include the humanistic method which views humans as communicators, and the abductive method, which seeks to find an explanation for the problem. In summary, alcohol and cigarettes act as a major in regard to how the youth act in group settings, and therefore may result in inclusion or exclusion based on the individual’s choice to consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
