This dissertation is about the condition of the human existence. It examines how being and existence has been understood in modern time, thereby meaning more precisely the period roughly 1840-1930. The period is defined by the works that has been chosen for this dissertation: Soren Kierkegaards Sygdommen til Døden, Friedrich Nietzsches Således talte Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra) and Martin Heideggers Væren og tid (Sein und zeit). The dissertation first examines and gives an account of how each philosopher understand and describes the being that each person experiences as their own specific existence. Secondly the understandings of the philosophers will be discussed according to their different backgrounds, starting points and their respectively purposes with the current works. Thirdly and last it will be discussed which kind of meaning each philosopher attaches to the personal human existence.
