This study evaluates the possibility, of applying drone technology in search and rescue scenarios at sea. This evaluation takes the form of a technological forecast by which the different aspects of the technology, i.e. battery technology, control theory, Human Computer Interaction, is studied in order to determine, which of these aspects needs further development before implementation. Furthermore we discuss whether drones are applicable in search and rescue missions in Denmark with specific relations to the case at Juelsminde. We experiment with a cheap quadrocopter in order to simulate a search and rescue mission by locating a target and locking into autopilot mode, which implies stabilization and hovering above current target. We have, through analysis of the case at Juelsminde and existing knowledge about drone technology, designed a solution that we believe can assist the current rescue teams.
