Studenteropgave: Bachelorprojekt

In this paper, we will argue for the current ban on doping to be modified not to include EPO, blood doping, growth hormone and the like. Three arguments against lifting the current doping ban will be reconstructed for criticism, including one concerning the spirit of sport, one concerning the health of athletes and lastly a game theoretic argument. We will argue that WADA’s wide definition of the spirit of sport makes their argument unsound. The health argument’s problems include under which circumstances something is considered to be unhealthy, the already allowed health risks in elite sports and the ethical dilemma in deciding whether or not an unhealthy act is always morally problematic. Quandaries concerning the game theoretic argument will include discussing why we should listen to athletes’ wishes, the reason why an athlete would choose a doping ban and problems concerning the possibility - or rather impossibility in enforcing a global doping ban within large athletic organizations.
