This thesis aims to investigate the effects of documentation in the pedagogical work on providing care, from the perspective of a care worker´s point of view, as well as the consequences documentation has on their daily practice in a typical Danish daycare institution, CAS (Center of Autism and Specialized Pedagogy). Dorothy Smith’s method regarding institutional ethnography as practice has been used in this thesis to investigate the subject mentioned before at the particular institution. In addition to institutional ethnography, the theoretical part of the thesis is based on Donald Schön’s epistemology regarding the reflective practitioner. Besides Schön, different kinds of literature have been applied to cover the following themes: specialized pedagogy, documentation, care and didactics. Additionally, single interviews were completed to explore documentation in relation to care and to understand workers’ experience of the subject first hand through the thesis’ for research questions. The empirical framework builds on interviews with five educated care workers at the selected institution. Furthermore, this thesis shows that the care workers at CAS believe that documentation has both positive and negative elements. The care workers are divided according to how the handle documentation in their daily work. Nevertheless, the general opinion is that documentation creates frustration for the care workers for different reasons. Some care workers in this investigation believe that documentation takes away from providing actual care to their residents and a lack of recognition. Other care workers approve of documentation in their daily work because documentation allow them to better understand their residents’ needs. For care workers that are positive toward documentation in their practice, knowledge of their residents allows for better care in relation to workers’ schedules. Furthermore, when documentation is kept, care workers create a structure in which residents receive follow-ups, which makes the care workers able to measure the resident’s development easier.
