Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

This project wishes to examine how the multinational mass media company Disney portrays gender roles in a selection of their movies, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Tangled and Frozen, and whether or not a change within the gender roles portrayed in these movies occur. The project wishes to do so through several thorough analyses, one of which is based on the theory of Judith Butler. Her Gender Theory, which was published in her controversial book Gender Trouble, operates with terms such as ‘heterosexual matrix’ and ‘performativity’. She uses these terms in an attempt to discard the binary gender system. Another analysis used in the project is a stereotype-based characteristics analysis. This analysis focused mainly on the inner and outer characteristics of chosen characters. The project also uses an analysis, in which the themes of the movies are highlighted and compared, to enable the most prominent themes to be recognized. Furthermore the project uses the theory Three Waves of Feminism from Charlotte Kroløkkes book Gender Communication Theories and Analyses. This theory operates with terms such as ‘feminism’, and this theory is mainly used to put the other analyses’ results into a historical perspective. This project is, within theory of science, grounded in the social constructivism mainly due to the fact that the main theoretician, Judith Butler, works within this field of perception. Therefore, this project works within the assumption that everything is socially constructed. The project concludes, based on the analyses, that there is a tendency that the gender roles reflect the binary systems understanding of gender. It is also concluded, that whenever Disney’s characters try to deviate from the heterosexual matrix, it is done through humor. Furthermore, it is concluded that the genders are portrayed more complex in the later movies, and therefore they also reflect the time in which they are produced. This adds to the conclusion, that the three waves of feminism are also seen in the character development within the Disney movies.
