The main focus of this historical project was to interpret the connection between the Danish nation-al identity and understanding of the colonial history. The discourses in the current debate on the Danish states possible apology to the descendants of African slaves in the U.S. Virgin Island, was supposed to demonstrate the duality between these two concepts, which could illustrate the national identity in Denmark, through opinions from politicians, newspaper articles and academics. Espe-cially Anderson, Wodak and Eric Jensen expounded the primary theory of the analysis, which was processed through a culture theoretical point of view. Afterwards multiculturalism in Denmark were discussed and compared to England. After the analysis and discussion the project concluded that the public debate on the apology could be looked upon as an indicator of the national identity, which is characterized by a selective use of history, that proves that Denmark has not fully accepted its colo-nial history.
