Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project investigate the philosophical influence of Jean-Jaques Rousseau’s Discours sur I’origine et les fondemens de I’inégalité parmi les hommes on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werthers. The concepts of the natural and conscious man that are set forth in the second Discours are compared to Werthers dualistic selfhood and the influence this has on the understanding of the narrative of Werther. Furthermore the project assesses the extent to which the revised 1787 version of the novel emphasizes the linkage of the themes of Discours and Werther. It is concluded that Goethe is highly influenced by Rousseau's thoughts about the incompatibility of the natural man and the civilized society.
