In this design project we investigate developing user interfaces with high usability and a well-designed user experience. We examine IT-systems in the healthcare sector, specifically the systems used in nursing homes. The purpose of IT-systems in nursing homes is to share information between employees; to ensure that the residents receive optimal care.
Interviewing the stakeholders and users of the system, has lead us to an understanding of how IT in nursing homes is developed and used. Based on these interviews, we conclude that nursing homes needs a more user-centered IT-solution. This is apparent, as an often-repeated task, such as forming an overview of the residents, becomes too time-consuming.
The goal of this project is to create a first draft of a more user friendly touchscreen system, which aims to provide a simple and effective overview of the residents health care situation. We therefore review a design process, with the intended users in focus and a theoretical base in the fields of User Experience and Usability.
The result of this work, besides some System Sequence Diagrams of the user-tasks, is a set of navigation diagrams, which have been tested on a group of students. We conclude, as the end of this study, that a user-centered focus when developing a healthcare system for nursing homes, is an important focal point in system development.
