Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

This project explores the understanding of gender identities and gender constructions in the poststructural society. More speci-fically, this project is based on the framework and dynamics of developments in society, and the impact of these developments towards how gender classification is understood. The analysis in this project is based on two autobiographical stories, from the anthology of Queer Theory. They were written by transgender people, and other individuals within the queer environment, in order to explain their journey throughout the construction of their identity. The overall question that this project wishes to answer is whether the introduction of an official third gender is nece-ssary, or not. It can be concluded from the analysis that there is no immediate demand for a third gender, but rather, there are wishes to remove the need for an individual to be classified by binary gender. A third gender could though, be used as a legal term, for individuals who biologically cannot be defined as binary sex in nature. Defining a third gender in this way could also be helpful towards creating a broader understanding of gender definition in society.
