Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

How do we define a proper political speech? Is it how they adapt to the rhetorical situation? How their ethos is increased? And can you even determine whether a speech is fair or not? We have found that Danish politicians use an increased amount of smear and political mudslinging in their speeches, which is the source to our investigation. Therefore we have chosen to look respectively at Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen’s 1st of May speech in 2013 and Morten Messerschmidt’s speech held at Dansk Folkeparti’s yearly meeting in 2011. Through a comparative, rhetorical analysis we have been able to discuss both Schmidt-Nielsen and Messerschmidt’s way of relating to the rhetorical situation and how they succeed in their kairos. Further more we have rated whether they have supported their ethos through smear. And lastly we have discussed whether their speeches are fair and if you can even fully categorize fairness. Conclusively we have found that Schmidt-Nielsen and Messerschmidt both adapt to the rhetorical situation but also adapt the situation to their benefit. There by we neither reject Bitzer’s nor Vatz’ theory. Further on we have concluded that even though political smear is frowned upon, and by others predicted to degrade the speaker’s ethos, used in the right way, it can actually increase the speaker’s ethos. Lastly we have concluded that fairness in speeches has a rough line, which is not determined only on a few unfair elements. The definition of good political rhetoric in Danish politics can be predicted to have a tendency to combine efficiency and normativity in political speeches in order to become as persuasive and powerful as possible.
