Abstract In this project we have studied how the feeling of loneliness affects young people’s life quality, also how community can be seen as health-promoting for these young people’s social and mental health. We have therefore based the study on the social and volunteer driven youth organization Ventilen, which is a meeting point and place for these young lonely people. We have chosen to include theories concerning, community, social and mental health and life quality, which form the theoretical frame of the project. We have also included qualitative interviews with six respondents of Ventilen Copenhagen, which construct the basis of our analysis. In the project we found, that the participation in a community like Ventilen can have a health-promoting effect on lonely young people, as it can reduce the feeling of loneliness and generate positive gains in form of for example enhanced self-esteem and confidence. We can conclude that the community in Ventilen, does not completely remove the feeling of loneliness, but merely reduce this to some extent. The community in Ventilen is not an overall and long-term solution, but is rather seen as a treatment for the symptoms of the feeling of loneliness for these young people.
