The project is a study in the creation of general education among students, and it seeks to investigate how teaching in literature-history can promote general education in the individual student. The project is based on an internship at a high school in Copenhagen, where the students were to have a course in the historical and literary period The Modern Breakthrough. The students should, among other things, work with a short story and a documentary section. In order to promote the general education of the individual student, the project concludes that the work with the novel created reflection among the students, and despite the novel written in 1883, the students were able to make references to their own lives. Moreover, it was essential that most of the students were Muslims, and the documentary section was selected because of its focus on the position of the Jews in society in the 19th century. The student’s work with the documentary were arranged in order to create identification between the religious student’s and the Jewish society in the historical and literary period. The project concludes that it is necessary to arrange an education that is recognizable for the student's lifeworld to create general education and reflection among the students. The fact that the students should relate to another religious community, as there was wide skepticism about the Jews in the class, resulted in a greater degree of education in the individual, as the general education occurs both in the identification with the known, but also in relation to the unknown.
