Project titel: The diverse urban space – a study of interaction at Superkilen. With the combination of Sociology and Planning, Space and Ressources, this report seeks to examine the public, urban space, Superkilen, at Nørrebro in Copenhagen. On the basis of the research question “How can the urban space, Superkilen, be seen as a diverse, comprising urban space, which forms social interaction in the neighbourhood?” The lack of cohesion in an individualized society creates unrecognizability amongst the citizens of the neighbourhood. It is therefore essential that newer spatial planning produce urban city spaces, which contributes to social inclusion and helps constructing a lively city. The urban spaces must therefore constitute a gathering place for the diversity of the city. The urban space, Superkilen is a comparatively new project, which is a place in a neighbourhood of Nørrebro called Mimersgadekvarteret. Nørrebro is an area of Copenhagen, which encompasses a large cultural and social diversity. The urban space, Superkilen contains of three individual spaces and runs from Nørrebrogade to Tagensvej, and connects through a traversing biking lane. The commune of Copenhagen tried to embrace the diversity of the metropolitan by placing the urban space in this multicultural area. This study seeks to examine whether the diversity of the neighbourhood is integrated in the urban space, Superkilen. Furthermore whether the social interaction within the space forms a social inclusion. Through an analysis based on our own observations studies, we investigate the inclusion mechanism of the area. ! 3! In the analysis we have drawn on the theory of Michel de Certeau’s essay, ”Walking in the city”, and Henri Lefebvres ”Rhythmanalysis”. This will lead to an analysis of the harmony and disharmony of the urban space. These definitions will describe how the social interaction within the urban space forms a community. On the basis of the analysis we discuss the including and excluding mechanisms of the different groups at the urban space. This discussion draws on a theoretical description and definition of “the complete, social urban space”, and wishes to debate if the observed interaction forms a public, urban space for diversity and community in the neighbourhood. The study concludes that the facilities of the urban space develop a social interaction of the individuals, through which the space combines the practices of the users into a constructed community. This community generates inclusion of diversity in the neighbourhood.
