Studenteropgave: Bachelorprojekt

Abstrakt

This paper examines how materiality and the body are expressed in contemporary Danish
literature, through an analysis of three works. These works are specifically Huden er det
elastiske hylster der omgiver hele legemet (2011) by Bjørn Rasmussen, Jeg æder mig selv som lyng
by Olga Ravn (2012) and Bedårende (2017) by Ida Marie Hede. This study will commence
with an analysis of the three different works and how each of them relate to materiality,
gender constructs and body fluids. The theoretical framework for the discussion consists of
different theories concerning materiality, gender theory, and posthumanism, in which the
three works will be discussed. Moreover, the study discusses how the different approaches
to the body, as well as materialism and posthumanism in general, can be seen as part of a
larger tendency that criticizes the anthropocentric philosophy of man. Furthermore, this
part of the study discusses how literature, in general, serves as a medium for criticizing
‘forgotten’ elements of what is labelled as the cultural poetic. This paper argues that the
three works introduce three different approaches to representing the body and materialism
in general. This study concludes that the body is not of a passive nature – and that it on the
contrary is active, uncontrollable and sometimes incomprehensible.
