On the basis of own empirical data, a survey and a focus group interview, the purpose of this report is to examine how young people aged 18-25 years use the pornographic media. This empirical data is weighed up against Rune Gade’s and Linda Williams’ existing research in the field of pornography and connected with Judith Butler’s theories about normativity in regards to gender, sexuality and desire. We conclude that there is a connection between the young users' perception of identity and the way in which they articulate their use of porn. It also turns out that they not only use porn for individual sexual satisfaction, but also as part of their identity development and as a humorous touch within a social frame. The main points that are based on our empirical data have in some respects been compatible with Gade’s and Williams' theories but some of these points have also shown to enable criticism of both these theoreticians and their research standpoints.
