Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project will shed light upon the different meanings and ideas of the ‘cosmopolitan’ according to three writers: Peter Kemp, Jonathan Rée and Bruce Robbins. The three different interpretations of “cosmopolitan” are divided into different concept terms that each carries meaning and value for the line of thought behind the type of cosmopolitan it describes. These concept terms are not interpreted until the discussion between different types and goals of the three types of cosmopolitans and give insight into the ideal by which they are constructed. The project concludes that - while some ideas of these types of cosmopolitanism can merge - others are from so different a line of thought that they are impossible to unite. The ones merging are the ones with an ideal of multiculturalism and with roughly the same idea of ‘nation’ and ‘culture’, mainly Robbins and Kemp. While these types of cosmopolitan ideas set out with different goals, Robbins’ is that the idea of particularistic science is true to the culture it describes while the other, Kemp’s idea, is mainly about global community; the third and last idea, Rée’s, is almost dystopian in its critique of modern society as a construct of illusions and criticizes the cultural priority in the two first types of cosmopolitanism. The merging ideas hold true to an ideal about cultivating knowledge and to disclose the structures of global society, though one speaks of academic life and another about political interest for humane interests. Cosmopolitanism is today a common term, but used in very different ways and contexts, and even though this particular project only touches on some of the aspects of cosmopolitanism and only on three of many academics concerning themselves with cosmopolitanism, this project offers a reading of three very different cosmopolitanisms which criticize each others as well as contribute to a common idea
