This project examines tendencies among young people who use volunteer work as a way to prepare for work life and therefor wants to improve their resumé.
Through abduction, working with relevant social scientific theories, public data and by conducting interviews we have found a number of themes to be relevant. From those, this projects main conclusions are; that young people uses the volunteer work as a kind of tool to get skills they can use later on, when they apply for a paid job. At the same time they do not separate their social commitment from the need of getting work skills.
Also we conclude, that because of the structure in organization of volunteers, where high skills are often demanded, the volunteer work looks a lot like the paid work. E.g. it is normal that a young person wanting to do volunteer work needs to send an application and go through a screening process much like for at paid job.
Volunteer organizations has traditionally had a function in society that supports democratic and community oriented processes. It seems like these processes are being undermined, because of the demand of high academic skills inside the Volunteer organizations, which create more hierarchically and network orientated mechanisms.
For young students the volunteer function becomes a tool that can help them become more competent, and it can also function as a way to kick start their carreers through well developed networks. This is something that the young informants in this projects are very well aware of even before they start applying for paid job within their desired carreer.
